8 DIY Winter Wedding Ideas

This is a post I have been wanting to write for a long time! And since we are approaching our 5 YEAR wedding anniversary, I thought now would be a great time! I am really excited to share our DIY Winter Wedding details with you all. I poured blood and sweat (no tears though, I was definitely a Bride-chilla) into the making of white winter wedding for the 9 months we were engaged.

I began pinning every snow and snow flake inspired wedding pin on Pinterest. I quickly developed a vision for our wedding and off I went to Hobby Lobby and wholesale craft sites to get it going. For me, this was the pinnacle of my DIY skills. I felt I had been training my whole life for this! My mom worried that I was going to get overwhelmed because I wanted to do basically everything myself. I wanted personal, thoughtful details. I wanted to make my own center pieces, table chart and table numbers. I wanted to make my own snowflake chandelier with lights and tulle. And when I couldn’t find the votives that I had envisioned, well, I wanted to make those, too. And I did. Here are the best winter themed-DIY projects from our beautiful winter wedding!

1. Snow Flake Votives

I wanted our votives to look like they were covered in snow. I used a foam brush and tacky glue to brush basic, clear glass votives with glue. Then I rolled the votives in an Epsom salt and glitter mixture. The results were incredible! They were easy to make, and they looked so beautiful lit up!

I saved 6 of them and love to bring them out to decorate my house in the winter. They actually still look pretty good after 5 years, though are beginning to shed their salt.

so snowy!

2. Snow covered branch centerpieces

The HIGHLIGHT. I was so proud of these babies. I put a lot of time and thought into these, and it paid off. First, I ordered square tall vases from a wholesale craft website (Sorry, I don’t remember the website! But they were similar to these here) and also vase filler “ice chunks” to fit in the bottom. Think about the round or oval glass beads you can find at craft stores to put in vases. These were kind of like those, but I didn’t want the round look of glass. I wanted chunky, ice jewel looking things. Similar to these.  Next I ordered real branches from a wholesale craft site. I wanted REAL branches that were more stick-like and less curly. I used a spray adhesive to cover the top half of these in glue. Then I used the same Epsom salt and glitter mixture to pour over them. The result was a perfectly snowed on branch!

The branches packed and ready to go to the venue!

Trial run before the big day.

I loved, loved, loved how they turned out. To finish the look, we had three white hydrangeas positioned at the top of each vase and surrounding the sticks. The Otsego Club (where we had our reception) loved the snow covered sticks so much that they saved them all and put them all in one large vase! They still look so cool displayed in the ski club.

I also saved a bunch of these for my house, and I still enjoy it today with fake hydrangeas displayed in my home.

3. Table Numbers & Names

I collected and cleaned a variety of large and small pine cones. Next I used a foam brush to cover the tips in glue, and sprinkled salt and glitter on them. I then glued them together to make a pinecone stand.

Instead of table numbers, I decided to name each table after a place that was important to us. Some of the table name ideas were where we had our first kiss, the name of the place where we met, where we were honeymooning, and other memorable places we had lived or travelled together. I also shared a sentence under each one as to why it was important to us! The guests loved wandering around reading all of the table names during cocktail hour.

4. Snowflake Chandelier

Using a variety of beautiful snow flake ornaments,  hangers, fishing line, Christmas lights and white tulle, I assembled a white chandelier for our venue! Our venue room wasn’t all that glamorous, a bit plain jane if you will. It needed some oomph! We hung up icicle Christmas lights from the four corners of the room and then gathered them in the middle. At the middle, I had cut and tied white tulle of various lengths to hangers to form a chandelier. I also tied snowflake ornaments to the hangers using fishing line so it seemed like it was floating. The chandelier was positioned over the head table and I loved the drama it added to the room!

5. Trees

Bring the outdoors in! I bought Christmas trees from Hobby Lobby that looked less like Christmas trees and more like pine trees. We positioned these around the dance floor and hung snowflakes from them.

6. DIY Vintage Ski Guestbook

I went to a church rummage sale and found a beautiful old set of skis for cheap! I added a few coats of silver spray paint and we had our guests sign this! People love it and I heard people talking about it at weddings years after. They now sit in my home office and they still make me smile.

7. A Grand Woodsy Entrance

I went walking in the woods behind my parents cottage, and found 2 little sticky trees that could be cut down. We used two by fours to make a little tree stand, and then I covered them with Christmas lights. We used a pretty snowflake table cloth borrowed from my aunt as a tree skirt around each. Using extension cords, we put one on each side of the door where we did our grand entrance.

I don’t have a great picture of this, but you can kind of see it here in the background on the right side!

8. Wedding Cake Topper and Flags

I had bought a salt and pepper shaker back in 2010 (the year we met) that I just HAD to have. It was a brunette skier kissing a blonde snowboarder. I mean, c’mon. When we got married, I instantly knew this was gong to be our cake topper. I made a little veil for the skier using a piece of white tulle. I even glued glitter to the trim of the veil to add a little sparkle! I also glued a turquoise bow tie on the snowboarder.

I bought New Zealand and American flag toothpicks to put in our cupcakes! Each toothpick got two flags, and I loved how it showcased our two amazing countries. We displayed cupcakes on cut log rounds.
