The 6 Things I Always Wear When Traveling

Functional and practical. That’s the name of the game on long haul flights. I am not one of those girls who look glamorous traveling through the airport, with wavy hair, tight jeans and high heels. If you are one of those girls, more power to you. Teach me your ways. Until then, these are the six things I always wear when traveling internationally.

1. Compression Socks

The not-so-sexy-but-ultra-functional compression socks help reduce swelling as well as the risk of blood clots in your legs. Since wearing compression socks on long haul flights, I have noticed my legs feel way, way better after the flight and the little swelling there is, it is barely noticeable and goes down much quicker. I love these multi-color ones here!

2. Layers

Comfort is key. I have been on some flights that are freezing cold, and some that are way too warm. There’s no predicting what you’ll come across, so the answer is to be prepared! I wear a t-shirt or tank, paired with a long sleeve cardigan or loose long sleeve shirt. I also always bring my blanket scarf just in case. I wear the Vinayasa scarf from Lululemon, and I take it everywhere, and it. Is. Everything. One of my best purchases I have ever, ever made. Get yourself one here!

3. Leggings

You’ve probably noticed a theme here, I like to be cozy.  I’m all about that snug life. And even cramped on a small seat that barely reclines, I need to be as cozy as possible. Wearing leggings allows my to stretch out, curl up and even do some light leg exercises to keep the blood flowing. I love the ones from Popflex, my favorite active wear line. Bonus: they have pockets. Check out the collection here.

4. Hairstyle: Sock Bun

My fail proof hairstyle and secret weapon for traveling. It’s comfortable and hassle free.  Here’s why: The sock bun style keeps my hair out of my face, so I’m not messing with it, so in the end it’s less greasy. At the end of the flight, I let it down and it leaves my hair in nice, easy waves. Having a fresh hair style when arriving at my destination leaves me feeling fresh.

5. A Watch

I realize there are clocks all around the airport, but it’s not always as easy to find the time when you’re in flight. I frequently keep my watch in Michigan time until I land in New Zealand. That way, I can tell how many hours we’ve been going and how many hours we need to go. On long haul flights, it’s also important to plan your sleep according to what time you’ll be arriving. So, if we are landing at 9am, then I’ll plan my sleep for the second half of the trip so that I am waking up to breakfast. If we are landing later in the afternoon, I’ll try and sleep first.

I’ve been wearing this Fossil watch for years and I have gotten so many compliments on it! The best part? After years of wear and tear (resulting in a scratched face, a missing rhinestone, and a broken band) I sent it in for repair of the band. For under $20 (for shipping) they delivered me what looked like a brand new watch! The rhinestones had been replaced and cleaned, the scratches were gone and of course the band was as good as new.

6. Comfy Shoes

Standing in line to check in, standing in like through security, standing in line to get food, to get on the plane, or running to catch the plane… there’s a lot of time spent on the ole feet when traveling! It’s super important to me that my feet are comfortable and shoes aren’t rubbing anywhere. I usually pick my trusty Keds for international flights, which are easy to slip on and off for security, light-weight and more supportive for the feet. (wait, do I sound like an old lady?!)
