How the Girl Told the Kiwi We are Having a Baby

WE ARE HAVING A BABY!! I can’t even believe I am typing that. If it wasn’t for all the pregnancy symptoms and my growing waistline, I wouldn’t believe it. Even though I’m 13 weeks now, it still doesn’t quite feel real. Today, I am so excited to share our story of how we found out we were pregnant!

To start, yes, we were trying so this was not a surprise. I was taking basically regular pregnancy tests once a week, but after taking some advice from a friend, decided to skip my weekly Friday test. The week following, I was starting to feel really crampy and moody. I thought, “for sure I’m not pregnant“. I was a week or so late, but my cycle is very irregular so I din’t think too much of being late.

Anyways, I decided to take a test that Friday if nothing happened. But Wednesday came along and that morning I woke up I just decided I couldn’t wait anymore! I took the test, and started getting ready for work. Anxiously, I kept glancing at the test on the counter. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that second little pink line show up! As the 2 minutes went on, the second line only got darker!! IT WAS POSITIVE!! I started shaking and whispering to myself, “NO WAY! Oh my gosh! That’s positive!” I giddily finished getting ready for work, and tried not to pounce on James sleeping in bed.

I walked into work with a stupid smile plastered on my face. Thankfully, we were really slow at work that day, and I was able to leave by noon! On my way home, I stopped at Target and browsed the baby section. I picked out a cute little newborn outfit with elephants on it. When I got home, I took another more expensive pregnancy test – just to make sure. When two little pink lines showed up AGAIN, I was confident. So, I packaged the outfit up in a box with a card that said “Feb. 2020“. I placed it on the kitchen counter.

When James came home, I told him, “Something came for you“.

Who’s it from?“, he said.

I don’t know”, I shrugged.

He opened it up, first reading the card that said Feb 2020. He held it up, looking confused, and said “hmmm, February 2020, what’s that mean?“. He looked at me.

Don’t know.” I managed to eek out, desperately trying – and probably failing – to hide my smile.

He then picked up the onesie and the tiny pair of pants. “What…?” Holding it up in the air, he looked at me, looked at the outfit, and said “Are you pregnant!?” in between happy laughs.

Uh-huh!” I nodded with tears in my eyes.

Really!? Holy crap!” He laughed, as I gave him another re-assuring “Yeah!”

“Crikey dickens, Brookie! Oh boy. We’re in it now!” He smiled excitedly.

I ran over and hugged him. “We’re in it now!” I parroted. We both laughed and smiled stupidly.

James’ parents were coming to visit from New Zealand in just 10 days! We couldn’t believe the opportunity we had to be able to tell all parents at the same time and in PERSON! Despite our excitement and initial reaction to want to Facetime everyone, we decided to wait.

James’ parents arrived and we had a summer BBQ at our house with both sets of parents, my sister and brother-in-law. We gave each parent a little bag with a piece of the baby outfit (a hat, a onesie, pair of pants, and the Feb 2020 card). They opened it all at the same time and it was so special!

Since then, my first trimester wasn’t easy, but it was bearable. Lots of all-day sickness, mood swings, and naps. Not to mention the anti-cravings (even the thought of vegetables makes me green). James has been the MOST supportive daddy-to-be, making me dinners, doing all the dishes and making sure I get to bed when I’m starting to act too grumpy.
